Wesley: The Story of a Remarkable Owl by Stacey O’Brien
For any bird lovers and specifically fans of barn owls, this book makes a lovely and heartfelt read. In 1985 Wesley was a little baby barn owlet when he was given to Stacey O’Brien to take of. He was unfortunately unable to make it on his own in the wild with a damaged wing and living with an owl expert gave him an incredibly long happy life instead.
Wesley was not easy to provide food for. Barn owls eat mice. Lots of mice. And this book does give an amusing (perhaps also a bit queasy) insight in to how one would need to arrange this for such a bird. Stacy does a great job of telling the readers the good, the bad and the funny sides to looking after an owl and you will see that she absolutely adored him. Get ready to fall in love with little Wesley and learn to appreciate the conservation efforts necessary to keep owls in plentiful populations in the wild.
As a biologist Stacey recorded his behaviour and funny quirks to share with others who might not realise just how big a personality a bird can have. He shocked her scientific community with her relaying of information on the meaning of every sound he made and just how intelligent and loving he was with her.
Wesley was indeed a remarkable owl, and this book tells the insightful, funny and fascinating story of his life.
