This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay
This is one of those books that are going to make you laugh and cry. (Unless you’re made of stone.) Adam Kay was a junior doctor for many years working all the hours the NHS could take, training him on his journey in Obstetrics and Gynaecology which he specialised in and eventually became a Senior House Officer in 2005.
Adam’s book reads like a diary of scribbled notes, amusing snippets of memorable patients who were kept anonymous, that he wanted to write about once he eventually had the time. Some of these stories will have you in stiches and some will break your heart.
As with all NHS junior doctors, doing his job well meant sacrificing time with friends and family and all for an underwhelming pay. These are sacrifices that they have to make and Adam describes it all very well.
This book will give you an insight into how difficult a life it is for junior doctors while providing plenty of humorous anecdotes along the way. If you’ve ever wanted to know more about the UK’s medical health system or what kind of day to day events happen for junior doctors, this book is for you.
